Thembisa author gets internationally recognition

Enock Sambo, a talented Xitsonga author known as Mlahleki Storyteller from Phomolong, Thembisa, achieved international acclaim by winning an esteemed award in Botswana.

His debut book, Nhloti Wa Manana, was recognised as the best indigenous language book at the Mulher Forte African Literature Awards held in Maun, Botswana, earlier this year.

The event brought together poets, authors and bookmakers from across Africa.

Sambo thanked the organisers of the awards for recognising his art and Xitsonga book on an international stage.

Growing up in a city where Xitsonga is often unrecognised, Sambo sees the award as a milestone for himself and an inspiration for young people who feel disconnected from their cultural identity.

He believes that anyone, regardless of their background or language, can achieve their dreams.

His wife, Lerato, has supported his passion and emphasised her commitment to standing behind him.

Her presence at the ceremony showcased their solidarity as they embarked on this journey together.

The award-winning Nhloti Wa Manana (The Mother’s Tears) not only received international recognition but was previously honoured by the Gauteng Department of Education through the Young Writers Project in 2021 on its debut.

More recognition followed on July 31 when the Global Honoree Authors Awards acknowledged Sambo.

Sambo’s commitment to preserving and growing the Xitsonga language extends beyond his writing.

He actively seeks opportunities for regional collaborations to expand his knowledge and contribute to the conservation and protection of African indigenous languages.

In addition to his literary pursuits, he is also an entrepreneur. He founded Valahleki Holdings, an umbrella organisation encompassing various entities.

Valahleki Bakery and Valahleki Book Publishers are the current operating ventures under his leadership, all aimed at improving society.

Nhloti Wa Manana is the result of 12 years of dedication and sacrifice, culminating in its debut in April 2021.

The novel serves as a guiding tool for future generations, imparting wisdom and knowledge.

The novel takes readers through various locations, including Hluvukani (Bushbuckridge), Thembisa Sthama Section, Lulekani (Phalaborwa), and more.

Nhloti Wa Manana is a gift to those who appreciate adventure, love, and understanding within the context of novels.
