Foundation feeds local homeless people on World Food Day
As an NGO that focuses on food security, Philemon indicated that they will keep doing what little they can to make sure that outreach programs take the needs of the homeless into consideration.
The homeless people of Kempton Park received a treat of soup and bread in celebration of World Food Day.
The Green Development Foundation distributed 200 cups of soup and bread to those living on the street of Kempton Park.
The event’s purpose was to acknowledge and commemorate World Food Day, observed on October 16 annually, to raise awareness about global hunger and promote actions to ensure food security for everyone.

“We usually focus on schools and community centres, but we thought this year would be best to focus our food day on those not always considered,” said Refilwe Philemon, marketing manager.
“On noticing that there were multiple areas where the homeless had settled and created homes for themselves, we thought it was best to position ourselves in areas where we were visible and accessible.
Our mascot, Buti Green, took to the CBD streets to make them aware that a meal was available.
“We will continue with the soup drives quarterly and at a larger scale on World Food Day, annually.”

Philemon stated the homeless people received them with so much love and excitement.

“The living conditions of the people are heart-wrenching, but it was comforting to see their gratitude and appreciation. It is important to remember they, too are humans who need care and love.”
“As the Green Development Foundation, we are pleased with the difference we were able to make.
“However, we know that one meal occasionally is not sustainable as these people need to eat daily,” she added.
