Music show creates awareness on GBV in Thembisa

“I decided to raise awareness through music, which serves as both entertainment and a means of informing the community about the terrible circumstances locals find themselves in.”

Mfanelo Dzanibe hosted the second annual music event on December 2, which aimed to address gender-based violence (GBV) and support victims by bringing in stakeholders who often deal with GBV.

The event was at Moses Molelekwa Arts Center in Thembisa.

According to Dzanibe, GBV is South Africa’s second pandemic, and in response, he launched awareness amid the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

“I am a journalist who covers a lot of stories in Thembisa, and have seen a lot of GBV cases that break my heart because victims end up dying.

“I decided to raise awareness through music, which serves as both entertainment and a means of informing the community about the terrible circumstances locals find themselves in.”

The Maskandi musician has a song called Enough is Enough, which is an appeal against GBV.

“Writing about it was challenging because it brought up many unpleasant memories of the GBV-related incidents I have seen.

Given that Thembisa has the highest number of GBV cases in Gauteng, I used my talent to speak out against the GBV epidemic.

Dzanibe thanked everyone who helped make the show possible.

“Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu. The event would have not been a success without the help of my spiritual mom, Thembi Mambithiza Tshabalala, Zanokuthula and her Amatshitshi, Imbizo Shisanyama (Busy Corner) CEO Senzo Mhlongo, community organisations, YANA, Tembisa Community Forum, Phindile and Sons, Thembisa SAPS GBV coordinator Sergeant Makgatho and the team and Thembisa Stakeholders Forum.

“I would like to thank them for all they have done,” said Dzanibe.
