Head of engineering takes part in the Little Eden Society annual campaign

The Flender head of engineering, Anton van Vuuren, took on the seventh annual Little Eden Society CEO Wheelchair Campaign with enthusiasm and compassion on March 9.
It is the third time the company has participated in the campaign.
Van Vuuren said he volunteered this year because the company’s CEO and CFO had already participated.
With a career marked by dedication and innovation in the engineering sector, Van Vuuren embraced the opportunity to step into the shoes of people living with disabilities, gaining invaluable insights into their daily experiences and challenges.

“When I was approached about the wheelchair campaign, I saw it as a chance to understand the obstacles faced by people living with disabilities.

As someone committed to creating solutions and improving lives through engineering, I felt compelled to participate.
“It was challenging. I expected it not to be fun. It was more challenging than I thought.”
Throughout the day, Van Vuuren navigated the intricacies of manoeuvring a wheelchair, gaining first-hand experience of the physical and environmental barriers encountered by individuals with disabilities who use a wheelchair.
“It was an eye-opening experience to realise the impact of seemingly minor obstacles on mobility and independence,” he remarked.
Despite encountering challenges, Van Vuuren was undeterred, demonstrating resilience and determination in overcoming barriers.
“While there were moments of difficulty, such as navigating narrow doorways and uneven terrain, it reinforced the importance of creating inclusive environments that accommodate everyone,” he shared.

“Through this experience, I hope to inspire others to embrace diversity and consider the needs of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of life,” he said.
Van Vuuren encouraged his colleagues and peers to join the movement toward greater inclusivity and understanding.
“By coming together to support initiatives like the Little Eden Society CEO Wheelchair Campaign, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society for all,” he said.

The money raised will go towards providing long-life care for 300 children and adults living with profound intellectual disabilities.
“Little Eden Society is immensely grateful for Flender’s participation in our CEO Wheelchair Campaign,” said Xelda Rorbeck, the society’s CEO.
