Children taught real-life skills at Pomona market

The upcoming 2024 market dates are June 29, September 28 and December 14 at 218 High Road, Pomona.

The kids’ market takes place quarterly at Urban Farmers in Pomona.

Mirandi Myburgh started the event last September to empower children and teach them crucial life skills.

Myburgh said she started the market to teach her children the importance of making money for themselves.

She wanted them to know there were alternatives for them if things didn’t go as they would have planned in the future.

“We live in a very uncertain time where we don’t know what the future holds for our children. I feel everyone can become an entrepreneur, even if it is just a part-time hobby,” said Myburgh.

The market only allows children aged seven to 16 to participate. Children wanting to be part of the market pay R20 for their stall.

Myburgh said the first market of this nature was a success.

“We had about 15 stalls, and they had a sponsor from A-Shak Cameo Decor Paints.”

She said there was also an anonymous sponsor of the R500 prize for the children. The winner of the R500 was chosen through votes and interviews by the judges, who also interviewed the children and looked at their stalls.

“There are criteria they looked for, such as the stall setup, whether what was on sale was homemade, an expense sheet, if they have communicated with their buyers and if they are positive.

“Out of all this, the judges would then choose the top five, add it to a hat, and draw one winner,” she said.

Myburgh said that although they want budding entrepreneurs to win, the competition is tough, and there can only be one winner.

“We give all the children small prizes.”

She said she wished more children would participate, learn and have fun.

“We would love to get schools involved and encourage their children to explore their hidden talents.

“We provide children with a safe environment and support to encourage them to explore the market industry and sell their products,” said Myburgh.
