Local learners get certificates for completing online courses

Hoërskool Birchleigh learners are rewarded for their time and dedication to the online courses they were part of.

The Field Band Foundation recently partnered with Afrika Tikkun Foundation to provide learners of Hoërskool Birchleigh with short online courses in artificial intelligence, career essentials and project management.

Afrika Tikkun provides youth in the community with after-school programmes designed to improve the developmental years through adequate education, leadership, arts, sporting, career and personal development, specifically while still in the schooling system.

The learners were involved in online courses as a result of the Field Band Foundation’s partnership with Afrika Tikkun Foundation.

Over 100 learners were enrolled for the online courses and over 300 underwent career profiling.

Project officer Godfrey Molele said that he wishes to enrol at least 800 learners by the end of the year.

“I am proud that the learners completed the courses and that we are impacting this community. Hopefully, we will achieve even greater things next year.”

Hoërskool Birchleigh Grade 8 learner Abigail Khoza said that the programme was nothing like what she expected, however, she enjoyed it and it was really helpful.

She added that she was happy she stayed for the end of the course and she is proud of herself for receiving the certificate.

“My experience during the programme was nice. We learned a few things about technology.”

Field Band Foundation CEO Wilna de Beer said that her team always wanted to develop a pipeline for young people and that is how the organisation’s partnership with Afrika Tikkun came about.

“We now can offer an opportunity for young people to be skilled. We are linking with like-minded organisations. I am proud of the learners and I am happy that they gave it a chance,” De Beer said.Hoërskool Birchleigh principal Carmen Govender said such an initiative is helpful because it develops their learners.

“The Field Band’s programs have provided a nurturing environment where learners, who once struggled with self-doubt or aimless energy, have found purpose, self-belief and discipline.

“Through music and performance, they are offered a creative outlet and simultaneously equipped with essential skills that extend far beyond the stage.

“This discipline, teamwork, and confidence they’ve gained through such efforts will equip them to walk out of gates and take their rightful place in society,” said Govender.
