Local councillor criticises Ekurhuleni parks department for inefficiency

He said said the party intends to request immediate intervention to ensure the department operates efficiently.

Clr Jean Kriek recently voiced concerns over what he called the “dysfunctional” state of the Ekurhuleni metro’s parks department in Kempton Park, which he claims is obstructing staff from fulfilling their duties.

“The parks department office on Plane Street, Kempton Park North, is responsible for maintaining public spaces, yet it lacks basic facilities like an internet connection and working phones,” Kriek said.

“Many vehicles are unlicensed and essential equipment, such as the grapple saw truck, has broken down.”

Kriek warned that neglected public spaces are rapidly deteriorating, leading residents to fear that overgrown areas may attract criminal activity.

He attributed the department’s issues to what he called a “complete lack of leadership” within Ekurhuleni’s local government.

“The FF Plus will not tolerate this level of mismanagement,” Kriek stated.

“We will address this matter with Leshaka Manamela, the Mayoral Committee Member for Environmental Resources and Waste Management at the upcoming council meeting.”

He added that the party intends to request immediate intervention to ensure the department operates efficiently.

“Kempton Park’s residents deserve safe, well-maintained parks where they can appreciate nature,” Kriek said.

In response, City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed to the Kempton Express that the parks department’s internet connection was restored on October 1.

He acknowledged that several vehicles still lack valid license discs due to pending services and Certificates of Fitness (COF).

Regarding grass cutting, Dlamini explained that the parks division follows a schedule that depends on weather conditions.

He noted that the City is in the process of securing additional resources to help manage overgrowth during the rainy season.
