Motion demanding city to clean Swartspruit passed
The DA is celebrates the passage of Swartspruit river cleaning motion.
Ward 104 Clr Tracey Lourenco recently announced the successful passing of a motion demanding immediate action to stop the pollution of the Swartspruit River and its wetlands.
“This motion compels the municipality to rapidly identify and eliminate the sources of sewage, industrial chemicals and other pollutants contaminating the Swartspruit,” she said.
By addressing these environmental hazards, Lourenco believes council is taking a crucial step towards improving the health and well-being of residents.

“Implementing this motion will resolve and ensure that the municipality takes appropriate steps to eradicate pollution in the spruit and rehabilitate the wetland to reduce the odour pollution emanating from the spruit, particularly close to residential and recreational areas.
“The motion will also see the development of a consistent programme to monitor and test the water quality in the spruit and legal action against industrial criminals caught polluting the Swartspruit,” she said.
Lourenco added that standing against such environmental crimes protects the city against ecological degradation and minimises the risk of potential diseases from water pollution.
“We acknowledge the ongoing collaboration with local organisations working tirelessly to make Ekurhuleni a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city,” said Lourenco.
Additionally, she added that this victory is for all the residents of Ekurhuleni, who deserve a municipality that is responsive to their service delivery needs and committed to preserving our natural resources.
