Kempton Park swimming pool revamp on the cards

The Kempton Park swimming pool is due for upgrades said to take place in the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 financial years.

The Kempton Park swimming pool, a once-thriving community facility, is earmarked for extensive upgrades during the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 financial years.

Ward 16 Clr Jaco Terblanche confirmed funding was secured through the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) process.

“Money has been made available, and the swimming pool is part of my IDP. We’re just waiting for a contractor to be appointed so the revamping can begin,” Terblanche told the Kempton Express.

The facility’s fencing is in a poor state.

The pool has not worked since the 2020/2021 season because of pump failures.

In its current state, the facility has been vandalised, with vagrants taking over the premises.

“It’s sad that such a vital community facility is in this condition. The pool could have been a great resource for children during the holiday season,” Terblanche added.

The department has allocated R6m for the 2024/2025 financial year and R6.5m for 2025/2026.

The planned upgrades include structural repairs addressing cracks in the main and children’s pools that cause water loss.

Upgrades for tile replacement and inspections for leaks will be set out.

In addition, the pump room and filtration system will need overhauling to ensure the pool operates efficiently once reopened.

Years of neglect have left the Olympic-sized pool and its surrounding facility in a dire state.

Collapsed walls replaced with barbed wire, deteriorated fencing, and illegally dumped waste are some of the visible signs of decay.

Behind the pool, heaps of waste have accumulated, further tarnishing the area.

The facility has also become a hotspot for criminal activity and an unofficial shelter for the homeless.

The Kempton Express reached out to the city on November 27 for comment regarding the timeline and scope of the upgrades. By the time of publication, no response had been received.
