Christmas comes early for Tawana Community NPO

“I aim to make this gathering annually, bigger every year,”

Glen Marais residents Willem and Sonica Shepherd, along with other community members, spread early Christmas cheer to the children of the Tawana Community NPO, turning their festive lights show into an act of kindness and generosity.

The idea began as a friendly competition between Sonica’s husband, Willem, and his cousin Nicci Schaefer, to see who could create the best Christmas lights on display.

“My husband’s cousin lives a few streets away, and for years, we’ve had a fun rivalry about who has the best Christmas lights. It gets more competitive every year,” Sonica said.

However, what started as lighthearted fun quickly grew into something more meaningful.

“We realised how fortunate and blessed we are, and we wanted to give back to the community, especially to the children at the Tawana Community NPO.

“Every day, we drive past the home and see the children playing or getting ready for school, and it touched us,” said Sonica.

The Shepherds, joined by Nicci and others, hosted a special Christmas celebration for the children before going on their holiday.

Even while away, the family will leave their lights on so the community can continue enjoying the festive display.

The gathering for the Tawana community was a success, with the community coming together to provide food, gifts, and entertainment for the children.

Clumsy Eddie, the Clown sponsored his time, and local individuals and businesses donated pastries, presents, and other essentials to make the day memorable.

“It’s amazing to see how many community members stepped up to help. It feels good knowing we could do something small to see the children happy,” said Sonica.

“Those children deserve unconditional love. To see their smiles brings me joy. I hope to make this an annual gathering and grow it bigger every year.”

Her husband, Willem, echoed her sentiments, expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed.

“The friends, neighbours, companies, and families who helped us are an inspiration. You showed the true Christmas spirit and made a difference in the children’s lives,” said Willem.

“My wife and I already have five children of our own. If we had the money, we would adopt all those children. I am sure others who were involved feel the same.”

“For us, Christmas is about family. It is our way of saying thank you for the year, for being there, and for everything we do for one another,” said Schaefer.

“Seeing the little ones happy means a lot to me. I want them to know they are enough and loved.”

Tawana Community NPO, established in 2018, provides a haven for children from birth to 12 years.

The organisation focuses on removing children from unsafe situations and giving them a home, access to education, and opportunities for a brighter future.

Founder Sylvia Mofokeng explained Tawana supported six foster children while providing temporary shelter for others referred by social development and child welfare.

Since its founding, the organisation has cared for over 100 children.

“Sonica and the community have done exceptional work for the children, creating a happy and supportive environment.

“We are grateful for their initiative and the positive impact,” said Mofokeng.

However, Mofokeng noted the NPO faced significant challenges, including rent, electricity bills, transportation for children attending different schools, and the ongoing need for food and clothing.
