Family devastated after fire destroys 45 years of memories in Cresslawn
“My family has lost everything, I am heartbroken this is something we can never get back.”
A family’s life was turned upside down when their home on Turner Road, Cresslawn, was ravaged by a devastating fire on January 16.
The fire destroyed the house, leaving the family with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Claudette Kleynhans expressed her heartbreak over the loss.

“I cannot put into words how I feel; it is just devastating,” said Kleynhans.
“My family has lost everything. I am heartbroken, this is something we can never get back. My father is overwhelmed by the loss; his whole world has been turned upside down.”
Kleynhans expressed her gratitude to those who have already donated, stating that any help is deeply appreciated.
A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, shared more about the impact of the fire.
“Despite the fire department’s best efforts, the house was destroyed because the fire was too intense,” he said.

“My father-in-law is very overwhelmed. In just two hours, he and his wife lost 45 years of their life’s work and memories.

“It’s not fun losing everything, and when I say everything, I mean they only have the clothes on their backs.”
He added that the fire department managed to save some original documents from the living room, which sustained about 80% damage, primarily to the ceiling.
“My father-in-law raised his five children in this house. Nine grandchildren also grew up here. This home holds countless memories for our family.”
While the family is grateful that no one was injured in the fire, the emotional toll remains immense.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support from our community. Many neighbours and friends have come forward with donations and assistance. We’re incredibly thankful for their kindness,” said the family member.
The family is currently staying in a flat at the back of the property, which was fortunately spared from the fire.

“We would like to thank the fire department for their quick response and professionalism,” he added.
“This has been a tough time, but the community’s support has been a light in the darkness.”
The family continues to appeal for donations and assistance as they try to rebuild their lives.

The family is in dire need of assistance and is appealing to the community for support. They have requested the following items:
• Clothing: male sizes L and XL
• Shoes: size 9
• Pants: size 34
• Bedding and towels
• Food and groceries
• A two-plate stove: As the power cable was damaged in the fire
