Local enthusiasts share passion for model aircraft

Gavin Lundie, one of the founding members, recalls the early days of the club.

“We first discovered radio-controlled model aircraft flying at the old Pretoria Radio Flyers club site near the famous Flying Saucer Roadhouse in Pretoria.

“We soon visited Redley’s hobby shop in Eloff Street, Johannesburg, where we met Hal Snow and Dave Norman, who recommended our first training model, a Carl Goldberg Snr. Falcon,” said Lundie.

The club’s first flying site was an open field in Birchleigh, where two runways were mowed into the grass.

The name “The Barnstormers” was coined by a visitor who remarked that Gavin flew like a barnstormer.

The club logo, designed by Mike Lundie, features a side view of a WW1 SE5 biplane.

Over the years, The Barnstormers have grown to become one of the largest and most active model flying clubs in South Africa.

The club offers a range of flying activities, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, FPV drones, quads, and control line flying.

Members can participate in competitive flying events, and the club hosts national competitions and airshows that are open to the public.

The club’s commitment to safety is evident in its adherence to SAMAA (South African Model Aircraft Association) rules and regulations, as well as its own safety protocols.

The club’s training aircraft and instructors are available to guide new members, and group sessions can be arranged.

Today, The Barnstormers Model Flying Club is a thriving community of enthusiasts who share a passion for model aircraft flying.
