SANTACO women host 2025 AGM
The event brought together women from all nine provinces to promote their participation in the taxi industry and support their growth as successful entrepreneurs.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Women’s Desk hosted its AGM at the Garden Court Hotel near OR Tambo International Airport on April 2.
The event brought together women from all nine provinces to promote their participation in the taxi industry and support their growth as successful entrepreneurs.
SANTACO President Abnar Motlhabane Tsebe said the organisation continued to support women entering this male-dominated industry through supportive policies.

He referenced the 2020 Lakota Resolution and collaboration with government and taxi industry leadership as key steps toward empowering women by creating space for them in the sector.

Tsebe acknowledged some women were initially hesitant to step forward because of negative perceptions surrounding the taxi industry.
“We are encouraging women to come forward. They understand the taxi industry is significant. Initially, some were reluctant because of perceptions about the industry.
“But with government support, programmes, training, and funding now available, more women are stepping in,” he said.
Tsebe added that SANTACO launched a programme specifically designed to support women, bring them together, and provide a platform for them to voice their challenges.
“From the government’s side, we have partnerships with institutions such as the University of Johannesburg and the University of Pretoria, with more universities coming on board.
“Our goal is that by 2026, at least 10% of the industry will be women,” Tsebe said.
The meeting also served as a platform for women to exchange ideas, experiences, and best practices in the taxi industry. SANTACO Chairperson Duduzekile Maphumulo addressed the need for unity among women and men in the sector.
“We need to stop the pull-down syndrome and provide more training for women to lead and develop their skills. Mentorship and addressing gender equality in the industry will help us build unity,” Maphumulo said.

Tselane Grace Mokeretla from the Free State expressed her appreciation, saying she felt inspired and motivated by the president’s address.
“I will take the president’s advice and implement it in my business,” she said.
The meeting drew an impressive turnout of women from across the country, highlighting the increasing interest and involvement of women in the taxi industry.
Attendees included entrepreneurs, industry professionals, and stakeholders passionate about driving women’s empowerment.
