Tembisa Hospital fire contained, services remain on scene
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The hospital is not receiving new patients and is on divert until further notice.
The fire that broke out shortly before 17:00 at Tembisa Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit has been contained. Emergency services including Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), remain on the scene.
“All patients have been accounted for,” said Eric Maloka from the City’s disaster and emergency services.
“There is still dense smoke moving in the direction of Zamokuhle Hospital,” he added.

Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, confirmed that the fire was limited to the Accident and Emergency Unit and did not spread to other parts of the hospital.

“It is important to assure the public and families whose loved ones are receiving treatment at the hospital that the fire only affected the Accident and Emergency Unit and not other wards,” said Modiba.

He added that the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital is not receiving new patients at this time and will remain on divert until further notice.
