Rising Star: Birchleigh North’s Njabulo makes waves as a genre-bending DJ
At just 22, DJ Njabulo Lubede is turning heads with her bold fusion of Sgija and amapiano—proving she’s a rising force in the local music scene.
At just 22 years old, Njabulo Happiness Lubede is already carving out a name for herself in the local music scene.
Known for her electrifying sets and genre-defying style, the Birchleigh North-based DJ officially began her musical journey in January.
Lubede, who performs under her own name, started practising at Capello in Birchleigh North, where she was mentored by fellow DJ, Webster (known as DJ WSlim).

“I’ve always had a good ear for music,” she said. “I enjoy playing and seeing people dance to the music I select. That’s what fuels me.”
Her love for music sparked as early as Grade 10, but she delayed pursuing it to focus on her studies.
Now, she plays a fusion of Sgija/Sgidongo and amapiano, a soundscape that speaks to her passion and creativity.
“The rhythmic patterns and sound of Sgija/Sgidongo inspired me to play this genre,” Lubede explained.
“My manager, Mfundo Zwane, also known as Brazzo Raps, guides me and helps me stay focused through the challenges that come with the industry.”

When it comes to curating a set, Lubede is intentional with her choices.
“I usually begin with calmer tracks to get into the zone. Then I build up with trending tracks to energise the crowd and get them going.”
Being a female DJ in a male-dominated space isn’t without its obstacles.
“Some men expect me not to have a voice when it comes to decision-making, and others doubt that a female DJ can play Sgija/Sgidongo,” she said.
“But I stay true to myself and ignore the negativity.”
Lubede counts herself lucky to have the unwavering support of her family.
“Whenever I practise at home, my family listens to the set I’m preparing for my next gig. They’re incredibly supportive.”

While she continues to build her music brand, Lubede also juggles a full-time job at DebtRescue.
“I’m a 9-5 girl too,” she smiled. “This year, I’m focused on booking more gigs and starting to make my own music.”
With her talent, drive, and a clear vision for her future, Lubede is set to rise even higher in the months to come.
