Hippo Alert: Mother and calf spotted near ERWAT plant

Residents of Ekurhuleni are urged to remain vigilant after two hippos, a mother and her calf, were spotted on a farm behind the Hartebeestfontein Water Care Works, located on ERWAT property in Kempton Park.
The animals are believed to have reached the area through the wetland and river system connected to the property.
This rare sighting has sparked both concern and curiosity.
⚠️ ERWAT (Ekurhuleni Water Care Company) has issued a public safety alert, stressing that hippos are extremely territorial and may become aggressive, particularly when protecting their young.
“For your safety, we urge all ERWAT staff and members of the public to stay away from the affected area,” the statement read.
Efforts are underway to safely capture and relocate the animals to a secure farm in Gauteng, with wildlife services being arranged to manage the operation.
While hippo sightings are uncommon in urban areas, the proximity of wetlands and natural waterways makes occasional wildlife wanderings possible.
