Three arrested at OR Tambo after allegedly scamming tourist
Officers were conducting patrols near the Engen Sky Stop garage when they were approached by a tourist who reported an alleged scam.
Three suspects were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on July 15 after they allegedly impersonated security officers and attempted to scam a tourist.
The suspects, two men and a woman aged between 37 and 48, were arrested by EMPD’s OR Tambo International Airport officers at about 10:20.
According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa, officers were conducting patrols near the Engen Sky Stop garage when they were approached by a tourist who reported an alleged scam.
It is alleged the suspects identified themselves as security personnel and demanded payment from the tourist for the use of a toilet at the garage.
When the suspects noticed the officers approaching, they allegedly fled the scene in a silver Suzuki Ciaz driven by the female suspect. Officers pursued the vehicle and managed to stop it a short distance away.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several items allegedly used in the commission of the offence. Police said all three suspects admitted to their involvement.
The following items were seized and booked into the SAPS 13 register as evidence:
- Two two-way radios
- Two card scanning machines
- Three security caps
- A fake registration plate, with the front plate removed and the rear plate still attached to the vehicle
- A fake name tag
- Parking tickets
The Suzuki Ciaz allegedly used during the incident was also impounded for further investigation.
The suspects are expected to face charges including impersonating security officers, possession of suspected fraudulent equipment, operating a vehicle with false registration plates and possession of law enforcement-related equipment.
“Our National Key Point is not a playground for criminals, and all those attempting to break the law will face the full might of the law,” said Thepa.
