Warning: Don’t share your banking details over the phone

Scammers posing as service providers request personal and banking details under false pretences of system failure.

Residents are again warned not to give any personal information to so-called service providers unless deals have been confirmed with your service provider.

A concerned resident contacted the Alberton Record to warn residents about calls from a streaming service that will first ask for their ID number and then try to get their banking details, since their system has crashed.

“I received a call from a person named Thulani, who told me I could upgrade to a premium package and get a new decoder for only R200 extra a month.
Then he tried to get my ID number and banking details from me with the lame excuse that their system had crashed and that they needed to upload information again.

“People should be vigilant and not give out such details. All of this should be on your service provider’s system.

“This man called me about four times in one day. I need people out there to be extra careful. Do not share their information and make sure who they are speaking to,” the resident said.
