Why Tumelo Carter loves Thembisa

I’ve had the privilege of watching this township grow, evolve, and become the vibrant place it is today. I truly love my community.

My name is Tumelo Eucan Carter, and I’ve lived in Thembisa for over 20 years.

I’ve had the privilege of watching this township grow, evolve, and become the vibrant place it is today.

I truly love my community and enjoy sharing its beauty and spirit with others.

Some of my fondest memories growing up in Thembisa are of community gatherings – moments when neighbours came together to celebrate, support each other, and enjoy life.

The soccer tournaments, in particular, stand out for me. They brought people together, united by passion and pride.

What I love most about Thembisa is the warmth and resilience of its people.

We look out for one another, and our diversity strengthens us. It is this unity that makes Thembisa such a wonderful place to call home.

When I want to relax or have fun, I head to the local clubs and bars because they are full of energy and great food.
I especially enjoy traditional dishes that remind me of home and heritage.

One of my most life-changing moments was when I joined the EPCSA church. They welcomed me with open arms. It became more than a place of worship; it became a family.

That experience deepened my faith and gave me a sense of purpose.

Like many communities, Thembisa faces the challenge of unemployment. I believe this is a root cause of many other social issues, such as drug abuse. Addressing job creation and youth development could lead to real and lasting change.

I’m inspired by local trailblazers like DJ Sbu, who turned his passions into successful ventures. His journey reminds me that success is possible with creativity, dedication, and belief in your vision.

If I had to describe Thembisa in three words, they would be: vibrancy, resilience, and community spirit.

Not many people know that I’m a passionate photographer. Through my lens, I capture the life, people, and moments that make Thembisa special.

Photography is my way of showing love for my township.

If I could bring one positive change to Thembisa, it would be the development of more community programmes for young people, focused on education, the arts, and sports.

Our young people have incredible potential; they only need the right platforms to shine.

The best advice I’ve ever received was from a brother I met at church. He told me, “Always be true to yourself and pursue your passion.” His words encouraged me to stay grounded and focused.

To me, home is a place of love, safety, and belonging, and that’s exactly what Thembisa is.

It’s where I’ve built relationships, grown as a person, and created memories that will stay with me forever.
