Thembisa’s creative voice: Chabzin on art, youth, and upliftment

Joel "Chabzin" Chabalala, a 27-year-old arts performer from Thembisa, is on a mission to empower local youth through music, art, and community. Discover how he’s turning passion into purpose.

My name is Joel Chabalala, better known as Chabzin. I’m a 27-year-old arts performer born and raised in Thembisa, Leboeng Ext 5.
I’m passionate about youth development and using creativity to uplift my community.

My favourite childhood memory of Thembisa is the energy and creativity we shared growing up.

Whether it was sport or the arts, we always found expression at places like the multi-purpose centre and the Leboeng Ground.

After school, we’d rush home, finish our homework, and then head straight to the centre for help or to perform. It was a space that nurtured talent and community spirit.

Joel Chabalala is a proud DJ and Thembisa native.

When it comes to kasi hangouts, I enjoy getting food and soaking up the vibe at The Hang Awt, Kajozi, The Weekend and Phosa’s Pub & Grill.

These spots capture the essence of kasi culture – full of flavour, music and connection.

A life-changing moment for me in Thembisa was performing at Rewind Pub & Grill.

I DJ’d a two-hour set, and watching the crowd react to the Afro-tech and three-step sound reminded me why I do what I do. The experience gave me hope that our sound, our identity, can heal and bring people together.

One of the key challenges we face as a community is the lack of infrastructure for children. There aren’t enough safe, creative spaces for young people to grow their talents or stay out of harm’s way.

A person who inspires me is Ashley Raphala, better known as ‘DJ Shimza’. His creativity, humility and the way he gives back to Thembisa, especially through events like the One Man Show, show what it means to lift as you rise. Thank you, brother.

If I had to describe Thembisa in three words: Creative, passionate, and warm.

My hidden talents? Besides being a DJ, I can sing and draw. Creativity flows through every part of me.

If I could bring one positive change, it would be reopening the multi-purpose centre. Giving children a place to express themselves could keep them away from harmful distractions and give them a real shot at success.

To me, home means a place filled with love, peace, unity and opportunity. That’s what Thembisa offers and why it will always be my home.
