POWER SHOCK: Electricity service costs surge without warning

The Democratic Alliance has said that the new tariffs, which came into effect on July 1, are not aligned with what was tabled in Council.

Residents across the City of Ekurhuleni woke up on Tuesday, July 1, to electricity price hikes that will see them paying significantly more while receiving less power for their money.

Some residents have reported that the basic service charge for buying prepaid electricity increased from R71.34 to R142.50.

The increases include higher basic electricity costs and additional service charges, which the DA in Ekurhuleni said the city has not effectively communicated, leaving many residents confused about the new tariff structures.

In a statement released, the DA said it voted against the budget and the “outlandish” tariff increases, stating they are unaffordable and will bring suffering to many households.

The party further claims that the new tariffs are not aligned with what was tabled in Council.

The Kempton Express has requested comment and clarification from the City of Ekurhuleni on the matter.
