Phenomenal Fitness Club promotes wellness for all ages in Thembisa

For over 18 years, Thembisa’s Phenomenal Fitness Club has empowered seniors and youth through daily exercise and wellness programmes.

The Phenomenal Fitness Club, an NPO rooted in the heart of Thembisa, has promoted healthy, active lifestyles for over 18 years.
With a focus on physical activity and nutritional awareness for all age groups, the club is a beacon of hope and wellness in the community.

Although the club officially registered as an NPO in May 2021, its impact has long been felt through its partnership with the Ekurhuleni FitFree programme.

Many of its members are referred by local clinics and come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite this, they show up daily with heart, hope and resilience.

The club runs two primary programmes, one for senior citizens and the other for youth.

The grannies division provides free daily exercise sessions for over 120 senior citizens aged 50 to 70.

These classes, led by qualified instructors, go beyond physical fitness and help build strength, improve mobility, reduce loneliness and support mental well-being. For many, they are a lifeline.

The youth division, catering to individuals aged 15 to 45, uses structured workouts to transform the narrative of health in the township.

The programme encourages young people to lead, mentor and embrace wellness. It provides positive engagement that helps break cycles of inactivity and counter issues such as substance abuse.

However, the club’s work is powered by volunteers and driven by passion, and that passion now needs community support.

The club lacks the financial resources to sustain and expand its efforts. Many of its senior participants depend solely on social grants, yet they continue to give their best daily.

It requires 60 yoga mats, 50 skipping ropes, 15 medicine balls (2kg), 10 dumbbells (3.5kg), 10 dumbbells (5kg), four sport game throw ring sets (five rings per set), two first aid kits, and 20 resistance bands.
