Fuel price cuts bring relief to South African motorists from Wednesday

Motorists can expect some relief at the pumps this week as all grades of petrol, diesel, and LPG see price decreases, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announces.

South African drivers are set to feel some relief at the pumps this week, with all grades of petrol and diesel recording price decreases from Wednesday.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) announced the following adjustments:
• Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): 4 cents decrease
• Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): 4 cents decrease
• Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 56 cents decrease
• Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 57 cents decrease
• Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 37 cents decrease
• Single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin: 49 cents decrease
• Maximum retail price of LPG: R1.32 nationally and R1.51 decrease in the Western Cape

According to the DMPR, the changes are due to a decrease in the average brent crude oil price, which fell from $69.06 USD to $67.01 USD during the review period.

Contributing factors include increased production by OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers, a slower global economic growth outlook, and uncertainty over trade tariffs.

“The average international prices of all petroleum products decreased in line with the decline in crude oil prices.

“This led to lower contributions to the basic fuel prices of petrol by 1.88 cents per litre, diesel by 54.35 c/l, and illuminating paraffin by 35.54 c/l,” the DMPR explained in a statement.

Prices of propane and butane also fell during the same period.

In Gauteng, the decrease means a litre of petrol 95 (ULP & LRP) will now cost R21.55, while on the coast it will retail for R20.72 per litre from Wednesday.

The rand also appreciated slightly against the US dollar during the review period, cushioning prices by close to two cents per litre across all petroleum products.
