Meet Nelisiwe “Code 10” Nkosi: Using her voice to uplift Thembisa

Now a social auxiliary worker, she inspires others while navigating the challenges and celebrating the spirit of Thembisa.

My name is Nelisiwe Precious Nkosi, but many know me as Code 10.

I was born and raised in Ivory Park, where I still live today with my mother and my two boys.

I attended St Gemma’s Primary School before moving on to Edlangezwa High School, and I now work as a social auxiliary worker at the Central Gauteng Mental Health Society.

One of my favourite memories growing up was during primary school, when I was chosen to perform for the entire school.

That moment built my confidence and sparked my love for public speaking, a passion that has opened many doors for me as a speaker and MC at community events.

What I love most about Thembisa is that it produces so many talented people. Our kasi has given rise to celebrities and leaders, and it continues to create opportunities for the youth.

Life here is not without challenges. In Ivory Park, overpopulation has put pressure on basic services.

We often struggle with electricity, constant load-shedding, and blocked toilets. These are issues that affect everyone, and while the solutions aren’t easy, I believe our community spirit keeps us moving forward.

I would describe Thembisa in three words: loving, caring, and fighting. No matter what comes our way, as Thembisans we don’t give up – asipheli moya.

Most people don’t know that I’m a bubbly, friendly, and talkative person who loves learning new things. I’ve even taught myself the basics of sign language because I believe in connecting with as many people as possible.

The best advice I have ever received came from my mother:

“Focus on what you love and don’t allow people to make you hate it, because some people don’t want to see others succeed.”

“That wisdom has guided me to stay true to myself and continue inspiring others. For me, Thembisa will always be home, a place where I can grow, give back, and keep using my voice to uplift my community.”
