Award-winning media personality and LGBTQ activist from Thembisa

From journalism and acting to radio, TV, and activism, Sinenzolo Mondi has made Thembisa his home since 2004, using his platform to uplift the LGBTQ community and inspire change.

My name is Sinenzolo Mondi.

I am an award-winning media personality and LGBTQ activist who has called Thembisa home since 2004.

I wear many hats in the media space, working as a journalist, actor, radio and TV presenter, and PR specialist.

Beyond that, my passion lies in activism. I serve as vice chairperson of Thato One Big Family LGBTQ Society, an organisation dedicated to addressing the needs of the LGBTQ community in our township.

One of my favourite memories of Thembisa is how the community has embraced me as a gay man. After being a victim of a hate crime, it was my neighbours and community members who stood by me. Their support reminded me that Thembisa truly is one big family, united through both good and difficult times.

My go-to spot for relaxation is Baffet in Phomolong Section, a true hidden gem of Thembisa. Another highlight for me was hosting the Thembisa Awards twice, including the very first ceremony three years ago.

That opportunity gave me exposure, expanded my platform, and marked a turning point in my career.

The biggest challenge our community faces is unemployment, especially among the youth and graduates. I believe solutions lie in stronger collaboration between NGOs, NPOs, and the private sector to create opportunities and skills development pathways.

I draw inspiration from media personality Mfanelo Phenyubheshu, whose success in the industry continues to motivate me to keep striving.

If I could describe Thembisa in three words, they would be: fun, affordable, and good people.

What many don’t know about me is that, beyond my media and activism work, I’m also a talented soccer player. If I could bring one positive change to Thembisa, it would be creating more employment opportunities for young people.

The best advice I’ve ever received came from my mother, who told me, “Never allow your background to put your back on the ground.” Those words continue to push me forward in everything I do.

To me, home is where the heart is, and Thembisa will always hold my heart. It is a place of tranquillity and belonging, where I am proud to live, love, and grow.
