Hazmat teams contain spill following truck overturn on R25

Technicians from the transport company arrived shortly after the incident and confirmed that the truck had been carrying ammonium nitrate.

At around 20:00 on October 28, an articulated truck carrying a toxic substance lost control, jackknifed, and overturned on the R25 towards Edenvale, just after the Zuurfontein bridge.

Emergency services from the Kempton Park Fire Station swiftly responded to the scene.

On arrival, crews found the truck lying on its side.

Preliminary reports indicated that the male driver had already been transported to a nearby medical facility for medical attention.

Technicians from the transport company arrived shortly after and confirmed that the truck had been carrying ammonium nitrate.

Both lanes of the road were temporarily closed to allow for a safe and smooth recovery operation. During this process, it was discovered that part of the tanker had collided with the truck when it jackknifed, resulting in a minor and manageable spillage. Two specialised hazardous materials teams were on-site to contain and neutralise the spill.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
