EMPD and Thembisa SAPS warn learners about risks of “pens down” parties

Safety awareness session highlights dangers of end-of-year celebrations linked to substance abuse, injuries and fatalities, urging responsible and supervised activities.

The EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit and the Thembisa SAPS held a safety awareness session at Masiqhakaze Secondary School in the Emfihlweni section of Thembisa on November 14.

The session focused on the risks associated with “pens down’’ parties, end-of-year celebrations that have increasingly been linked to serious incidents, including injuries, substance abuse and, in some cases, fatalities.

Officers urged learners to celebrate responsibly and in safe, supervised environments only.

Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane also encouraged learners and event organisers to consider safer alternatives and avoid activities that could jeopardise their futures.

He warned that underage drinking, drug use and other illegal behaviour can cause long-term harm and expose learners to significant danger.

Parents should remain vigilant, monitor their children’s whereabouts and ensure they are participating in safe, age-appropriate celebrations.
