Level 4 weather warning issued for Gauteng this afternoon

Severe thunderstorms with hail, heavy downpours and strong winds are expected across Gauteng this afternoon until midnight.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms across Gauteng this afternoon, December 2, with conditions expected to continue until around midnight.

According to the alert, residents should prepare for large hail, heavy downpours and strong winds, which may lead to:

  • Flooding of roads, low-lying areas and settlements
  • Damage to informal and formal structures
  • Difficult driving conditions
  • Possible closure of affected bridges and routes

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has confirmed that its teams remain on high alert.

“Aquatic units, firefighters, rescue personnel and disaster management officers are stationed across the city and ready to respond,” said spokesperson William Ntladi.

“Both formal and informal settlements may be vulnerable to flooding, hail and lightning, and communities are urged to stay alert, especially those living near rivers, flood lines or large trees.”

“With many learners already home for the holidays, parents and guardians are urged to monitor children closely, keep them indoors during storms and ensure they stay away from stormwater drains, flooded streams and fast-moving water.”
