City warns water network may take SEVEN DAYS to stabilise

Residents in several high-lying suburbs are currently facing the brunt of the crisis, with many still experiencing dry taps.

The City of Ekurhuleni issued a critical water status update on social media following recent infrastructure maintenance.

While the city reports that systems are beginning to recover, officials warn that it may take up to seven days for the network to fully stabilise and for water levels to return to normal in all areas.

Residents in several high-lying suburbs are currently facing the brunt of the crisis, with many still experiencing dry taps or critically low pressure.

Critical Areas: No Water Access

The following areas are currently without water supply. The City has deployed water tankers to provide temporary relief at the specified locations:

• Isando, Croydon, Spartan Ext 2, Bonaero Park, Parkhaven, Jan Smuts, Caro Nome, Pomona, and Brentwood Park:

Tanker Locations: One tanker at Brentwood Park Mall and four roving tankers throughout the suburbs.

• Phomolong and Parts of Chloorkop:

Tanker Locations: Paypoint, Phomolong Secondary School, Umdeni Street, Corner Freedom and Pallsmore Streets, and two roving tankers.

• Commercia Ext 34 and Friendship Town:

Tanker Locations: Friendship Town at the corner of Banana and Doberman Streets.

Areas Under Stress: Low Water Pressure

A significant portion of the region is reporting low pressure. Residents in these areas are urged to use water only for essential needs to allow reservoirs to refill:

  • Thembisa (Wards 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 14, and 89): Roving tankers are being sent to each ward.
  • Kempton Park Extensions and Bredell: Tankers are stationed at Spar (Bredell) and Glen Acres Shopping Centre.
  • Cresslawn, Rhodesfield, and Spartan Ext 12 & 19: A tanker is available at Cresslawn Primary School.
  • Clayville Ext 45 (MEGA projects) and Esselen Park Ext 2: Roving tankers are monitoring these zones.
  • High-lying areas of Terenure, Birch Acres, and Chloorkop.

Areas Successfully Recovered

The City has confirmed that the water supply has been fully restored to the following neighborhoods:

  • Spartan Direct Feed: Ester Park, Edleen, Van Riebeeck Park, Terenure, Chloorkop, and Kempton Park West.
  • Kempton Park West Reservoir 1: Norkem Park, Birchleigh, and Birchleigh North.
  • Jan Smuts: Kempton Park CBD and Kempton Park Ext 6–8.

According to the City’s statement even though maintenance work is complete, the process of “charging” the pipes and building up reservoir levels is slow. High-lying areas are traditionally the last to receive water during this process.
