City of Joburg EMS warns worshippers to stay safe at rivers amid drowning risks
The City of Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) urges worshippers to exercise extreme caution when conducting rituals or prayers at rivers, warning that such practices pose a serious risk of drowning.
The City of Joburg (CoJ) EMS has issued a safety warning to worshippers following a series of recent incidents of drowning linked to river-based religious ceremonies.
According to EMS spokesperson, many residents gather near rivers and dams for spiritual cleansing or baptism rituals, particularly over weekends and during festive periods.
However, these activities often take place in unsafe or unpredictable water conditions.
“We urge all worshippers to be extremely cautious when conducting religious practices at rivers or dams. These areas may appear calm, but can be extremely dangerous,” the CoJ EMS said in a statement.
The department noted that hidden currents, slippery rocks, and deep waters contribute to many preventable drowning incidents each year. EMS teams are often called to respond to emergencies where worshippers or participants have been swept away or trapped underwater.
Residents are advised to use designated safe areas, avoid entering the water alone, and always ensure that someone is on standby to call for help in case of an emergency.
The CoJ EMS emphasised that prevention is key and encouraged faith-based groups to work with local authorities when planning riverside activities to ensure adequate safety measures are in place.
“We care about the safety of our residents and urge everyone to make safety a priority,” CoJ EMS added.
The warning forms part of the city’s #JoburgCares and #SaferJoburg campaigns, promoting community safety across all sectors.
