Meet Mavis Mahlangu: Thembisa woman creating hope for vulnerable youth

Long-time Thembisa resident Mavis Mahlangu has turned her love for the township into action by founding a non-profit organisation that supports vulnerable children and empowers young people through skills development.

My name is Mavis Mahlangu. I was born in 1973 and attended Endulwini Primary School before matriculating at Ikusasa Secondary School.

I am a self-motivated, dedicated and hardworking woman.

I have lived in Thembisa for more than 25 years, and grew up surrounded by a strong sense of community, rich music and a food culture. Close family moments are memories I cherish.

Those experiences shaped who I am today. My go-to spot in Thembisa is HAYA Restaurant, located in the heart of the township.

Living in Thembisa motivated me to establish an NPO and drop-in centre (DIC) called the Bophelong-Empilweni New Life Community Project.

It supports orphans and vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV and Aids. Its aim is to help community members by creating a safe space they can turn to.

Many young people complete their schooling but struggle to find employment. Through my NPO, we work to address this challenge by providing skills development programmes, bursaries for TVET colleges and access to learnership opportunities.

I draw inspiration from the late Ms Cithi Fakude. Her resilience, strong community spirit and determination to hustle for her people continue to inspire and motivate me to always strive for my community.

I would describe Thembisa as vibrant, connected and cultural. If I could bring about change, it would be to create more opportunities for young people, which I believe would help reduce crime in our communities.

To me, home is where you feel understood without having to explain yourself. Thembisa perfectly fits that description because of the warmth of its people and the many memories that live here.
