New bird guide to highlight 185 species at Melville Koppies
A new bird-watching guide featuring more than 185 species spotted at Melville Koppies will be launched on March 15.
Despite being in the middle of a concrete jungle, more than 185 different species have been spotted on Melville Koppies.
On March 15, Melville Koppies will launch a new bird-watching guide to the area.
Developed by Ashlyn Campbell, a Greenside Design student who visited Koppies with her class in 2025, the guide advises visitors which paths to use if they want to see particular birds.
Illustrated with beautiful sketches by Ashlyn, the guide will inspire new and experienced twitchers to come and see how many they can tick off.

Join Koppies at 07:30 for the launch. Ashlyn will be there as well as several other birdwatchers ready to guide the visitors, should you be a novice twitcher.
If you can’t manage March 15, come any other Sunday between 08:00 and 11:30 and self-guide yourselves to find that elusive bird. Don’t forget other Melville Koppies activities as well.
You can book a guided tour on 072 348 0578 to learn more about the history, environment, rocks and more, or just wander around and enjoy being in nature in the middle of a big city.
For adults, entry is R100, for U18 its R50 and free for U5.
