City of Ekurhuleni opens 2026 community bursary applications for students

Programme, offering financial support to qualifying students pursuing full-time undergraduate studies at accredited South African institutions.

The City of Ekurhuleni has opened applications for its Community Bursary Programme for the 2026 academic year, inviting academically deserving and committed students to apply for financial support to pursue full-time undergraduate studies.

The bursary programme aims to support talented youth within the municipality, expand access to higher education, and develop skills that will strengthen future municipal service delivery.

Only qualifications offered by accredited South African universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges will be considered.

Applications details

• To qualify, applicants must be South African citizens residing within the City of Ekurhuleni and between the ages of 18 and 35.

• They must have completed Grade 12 and secured an acceptance letter or proof of registration for the 2026 academic year.

• Applicants must also provide proof of total household income.

• Applications must be accompanied by certified copies, not older than three months, of the applicant’s South African ID, matric certificate, acceptance letter or proof of registration at an accredited institution, and proof of residence within the City of Ekurhuleni.

• A one-page motivation letter, proof of household income such as salary slips or a stamped bank statement with an affidavit, and proof of social grant support, where applicable, must also be submitted.

• The bursary is renewable annually, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

• It covers registration and tuition fees, prescribed textbooks and, where applicable, accommodation and meals, depending on the availability of funds.

• Successful applicants will be required to sign a bursary contract with the city and maintain a minimum annual average of 70% to continue receiving financial support.

• Recipients may also be required to complete vacation work within municipal departments.

• The city reserves the right to withdraw the bursary in cases of poor academic performance or misconduct.
