Kempton Park artist shares his journey through the music industry

Local artist Nkanyiso Mkhize inspires through his story.

Musician and actor Nkanyiso Mkhize, popularly known as Tucci Zulu (28), has shared insight into his journey since relocating to Kempton Park in pursuit of his music and acting career.

Mkhize moved from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng to follow his dream of becoming a recording artist and actor.

He said the transition came with challenges as he adapted to life in a new province.

In his early days, friends assisted him with accommodation and access to studio space, where he began recording his music.

His breakthrough came after signing with an independent record label that managed and promoted his work, leading to regular bookings and performances at clubs, mainly in Thembisa.

However, Mkhize said his career later took a difficult turn after he discovered alleged financial mismanagement by the label, prompting him to part ways with the company.

He added that relationships with some friends also changed once the benefits they had been receiving ended.

“I believe once the movement collapsed and they couldn’t use me anymore, my friends started changing on me,” he said.

He further alleged instances where trusted individuals acted in their own self-interest and attempted to expose him to drug use, experiences he says were painful but eye-opening.

“I’ve faced a lot of hardships at the hands of so-called friends, knowing I have people that depend on me back home and my love for music keeps me going,” Mkhize said.

Despite the setbacks, he encourages aspiring artists to take time to understand the business side of the entertainment industry, not just the performance side, to avoid exploitation.

He emphasised that knowledge of contracts, management and industry structures is essential for long-term success.

Mkhize continues to draw on his experiences for inspiration in his music and is currently preparing to release a new single titled “Another Man’s Food is Another Man’s Poison,” featuring DJ Sebtick.
