Residents across several Kempton Park suburbs were left without electricity shortly after 13:00 on July 21 following another widespread power outage.

Areas reported to be affected include Terenure, Van Riebeeck Park, Kempton Park West, Birch Acres and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Ward 15 Clr Amanda Davison said the repeated outages are becoming increasingly frustrating for both residents and businesses.

“This recurring disruption is becoming increasingly frustrating for residents and businesses alike. Despite the frequency of these outages, the cause remains unclear, while the City’s Energy Department and the MMC for Energy have yet to provide any explanation or meaningful communication,” she said.

Davison added that residents deserve transparency and regular updates on the cause of the repeated power failures and the measures being taken to prevent them in future.

She called on the City of Ekurhuleni’s Energy Department to urgently communicate with affected residents, explain the cause of Tuesday’s outage and provide a plan to address the recurring electricity interruptions.

The councillor also stressed that the outage is not related to the ongoing 66kV line upgrade project currently underway in Kempton Park.

In its latest update, the City confirmed that the affected areas include Terenure, Van Riebeeck Park, Kempton Park West, Birch Acres and surrounding areas.

According to the update, the cause of the outage remains unknown, investigations are under way, and no estimated time for restoration (ETR) has yet been provided.

Davison said she will continue engaging with the relevant departments to obtain answers and keep residents informed as soon as further information becomes available.
