Eskom board chairperson receives three-year term extension

Eskom board chairperson Mteto Nyati will remain in the role for another three years, effective from November 1, 2026.

The extension was announced by Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

Eskom said the decision would provide continuity in governance and strategic oversight as the utility focuses on operational and financial sustainability, long-term competitiveness and value creation.

Under Nyati’s leadership, the board has overseen improvements in governance, accountability, operational performance and financial performance, including reduced reliance on diesel-powered generation and profits reported in two consecutive financial years.

The board has also overseen progress in Eskom’s restructuring, including the establishment and operationalisation of the National Transmission Company South Africa and the launch of Eskom Green, the utility’s utility-scale renewable energy business.

Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane said Nyati’s continued leadership provides certainty as the utility works towards long-term sustainability.

Marokane said Nyati is respected across Eskom, the energy industry and among key stakeholders, including organised labour, investors and the business community.

Nyati said he had accepted the responsibility with humility and understood what the country expected from Eskom’s leadership.

He said employees had helped move the utility from what he described as the worst crisis in South Africa’s democratic history to a position where it now has excess capacity that can support economic growth.

Nyati said Eskom must now help South Africa and the Southern African Development Community industrialise, adding that the utility must be more than a supplier of power and should serve as a platform for growth.
