Residents across Kempton Park were left without electricity on September 29, with ward councillors escalating the latest outage to the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) as technicians investigated the fault.

The outage, reported at around 14:10, affected several areas, including Edleen, Kempton Park West, Birch Acres, Terenure, Van Riebeeck Park and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Ward 15 councillor Amanda Davison, Ward 16 Alderman Terblanche, Ward 91 councillor McKenzie and Ward 104 Alderman Lourneco raised concerns about the recurring electricity interruptions and the lack of clear communication from the City.

In a message to residents, the councillors confirmed that they had alerted the Kempton depot and were escalating the matter to the MMC and the mayor.

“This is beyond ridiculously unacceptable,” Davison said, expressing frustration over the repeated outages.

In a separate update, Davison and Lourenco confirmed that the Energy Department had been informed and that a team had been seen working in the affected areas. They said further updates would be provided once more information became available.

At 14:45, residents were informed that the outage was affecting areas supplied by the Van Riebeeck 66kV substation network. The matter had been escalated for urgent investigation and restoration, but the cause and estimated restoration time were still being sought.

The CoE also issued a power update on social media, confirming that technicians were investigating the cause of the outage affecting Kempton Park West, Terenure, Edleen, Birch Acres, Birchleigh and Van Riebeeck Park.

The City said an estimated restoration time would be communicated once the fault had been determined and apologised for the inconvenience.

The latest interruption comes amid ongoing concerns about electricity infrastructure and service reliability in Kempton Park. On September 22, the City attributed a separate outage affecting Birchleigh and surrounding areas to theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure.
