New computer lab opens doors to digital learning at Thembisa primary school

Empact Group has donated a fully equipped computer lab to Welamlambo Primary School in Thembisa, empowering Grade 3 to 7 learners with essential digital skills and access to online learning resources.

Empact Group visited Welamlambo Primary School in Thembisa on July 24 to unveil a new computer lab, an initiative set to transform education for learners in grades three to seven.

The donation of 12 fully equipped desktop computers is the result of an ongoing partnership between Empact Group and the school, as part of the organisation’s corporate social investment (CSI) efforts to improve education in under-resourced communities.

The journey began in 2022 when Empact included several primary schools in its CSI outreach programme, providing support such as painting school walls with educational artwork to enhance numeracy and learning.

During a 2024 visit, Welamlambo Primary’s principal, Sipho Jacob Sibiya, showed Empact Group a space used as a staff room. He envisioned it as a potential computer lab.

After engaging with CEO Alan Quinn, Empact committed to turning the vision into reality by sourcing equipment and infrastructure for the computer lab.

The initiative aligns with Empact’s purpose of putting people at the heart of its work.

In 2021, Quinn introduced a company-wide ethos of Care, a pledge to do right by every individual and community the organisation touches.

“We handed over 12 computers to Welamlambo Primary,” said Sanele Mlambo, group marketing and communications executive at Empact Group.

Mlambo noted that learners previously relied on outdated textbooks and limited study materials.

“Now, they can gain access to real-time information, enhancing both the accuracy of lessons and the engagement within the classroom experience.”

The computers will also assist teachers in incorporating multimedia into their lessons, offering learners visual and interactive aids to reinforce understanding.

To ensure the lab is secure, the school has installed a cast-steel vault door and is protected by 24-hour security.

The investment goes beyond infrastructure; it is about long-term empowerment.
