Many opt for ‘easier’ licence

Over time many Code 10 drivers learn to properly drive a Code 8 vehicle

SAMUEL TYRIQUE writes:

Recently I had the opportunity to watch a few applicants take the K53 yard test at Kempton Park Testing Grounds, as well as read the Department of Transport K53 Manual for Light Motor Vehicles.

I realised that the requirements to obtain a Code 8 is so much harsher than that of a Code 10. And this is the reason the majority of applicants prefer to apply for Code 10, yet go on to drive a Code 8 vehicle.

Why are the rules and test different for Code 10? Should it not be similar to Code 8, if not stricter? The majority of applicants issued with a Code 10 driver’s licence and are found to be driving a Code 8 vehicle, can either not parallel park, alley dock or make a three-point turn properly.

Over time many Code 10 drivers learn to properly drive a Code 8 vehicle.

My point is, should the Department of Transport not relook this “loophole” in the system or ease up on the Code 8 requirements?

Vehicles should be driven according to the licence the driver was issued with.
