Fires started at hospital to burn long grass
Residents claim the long grass contributes to crime in the area, as criminals use it to hide stolen goods

REFILOE NT’SEKHE, DA constituency head Kempton Park/Tembisa, writes:
This weekend Clr Jaco Terblanche informed me there had been two fires at Kempton Park Hospital: one on Friday night and another on Saturday.
These fires were allegedly started in an effort to remove long grass in the area. Clr Terblanche further indicated he had been inundated with complaints from residents claiming the long grass contributes to crime in the area, as criminals use it to hide stolen goods.
Recently, I asked the MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu, about the maintenance of the grounds at this hospital.
She indicated there was no company contracted to maintain this hospital. Maintenance last occurred when it was functional.
Further to that, I asked when the hospital fence would be repaired, and she indicated it would happen on May 29, 2015: nothing to date.
Residents had also complained about the noise made by open windows, which were flapping. To this she said her department would only deal with this issue when they started renovating the hospital.
Based on the public meeting, which she asked MEC Panyaza Lesufi to hold on her behalf, her department indicated there had been a feasibility study conducted on February 26.
She has indicated this study had been commissioned by the Department of Infrastructure Development. They had commissioned a professional team that would deal with the detailed assessment of the facility and recommend a solution.
Their findings were that the facility could be refurbished and function as a district hospital.
I will submit further questions to the Department of Infrastructure Development to request a copy of this report.
