Martiens made her smile every day

'This is how I will always remember him'

MELISSA HORN of Cape Town writes:

It is with great shock that I learnt of the death of Martiens.

As a child attending Edleen Primary, my morning was not complete if the traffic officer on duty at the intersection close to the school did not wave at me and most mornings I got a wink as well.

Only years later when a friend of mine married his son, did I learn this officer’s name. Martiens Bann. He will forever be the man who made a young school girl’s day brighter by taking the time to wave.

This is how I will always remember him. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted in the thought that he was loved and will be missed by many.
