Rock placers are at it once again on the M2 highway as you take the N3 off-ramp coming from OR Tambo International Airport heading towards Roodepoort.
A rock, strategically placed in a plastic bag in the middle lane caused damage to my vehicle at 11pm on August 5. I was returning from a late flight from Port Elizabeth.
As I got onto the M2, I noticed something in the middle of the road, obviously at that point I was unable to swerve out because I was unsure whether there were other vehicles around me. Hoping that it was just a plastic bag, all I could do was to drive over it, only then realising that it wasn’t just a plastic bag.
Without thinking clearly, I got out of my vehicle to quickly assess the damage to my car and also to try and warn other motorists about this rock in the road. After I hit this rock, two more vehicles were damaged.
I went to collect the rock and spotted one of the rock placers on the other side of the road. He reacted angrily when he noticed that I was not just going to place the rock somewhere else on the road but that I was removing it completely by putting it in my car.
It is clear that this rock must have been used on several occasions as it is spilled with motor oil and has several ‘crash’ marks on it.
