On Tuesday, December 8, I was robbed of R1 000 while using the FNB ATM at the Elgin BP/Pick n Pay Express premises at 8pm.
The perpetrator used the modus operandi of ‘accidentally’ leaving his slip in the ATM as he was ‘using’ the ATM before me.

I obviously contacted my bank but within two minutes the money had been withdrawn from the account. Either at the Pick n Pay Express or a nearby ATM.
I feel Kempton Park residents should be warned about this as these criminals are very slick. What concerns me the most is the lack of assistance I received from the security and staff on duty.
There are security cameras positioned around the ATMs as well as at the Pick n Pay Express forecourt. I was informed the only way I could access these was if I contacted the police to open a case.
Both Pick n Pay and BP have a responsibility towards the consumers making use of the facilities provided. But unless I opened a case they were not interested in a crime that took place on their premises. As they have access to the security footage, I feel they should take the initiative and protect the consumer using the facilities they provide.
I feel it is their responsibility to view the footage and take the necessary steps to prove to the consumer that any crime committed on their premises will be fully investigated and security guards be placed around the ATMs and not just inside the Express store.
But more importantly, I think the community needs to be very careful when using these facilities.
