Water flows as repairs take place

This water was running for an hour and half before they closed it.

As we all know water is not to waste due to the low rainfall we have had these last few summer months.

For me as a concerned member of the community, not to waste water is a very strong subject.

On my arrival home on Thursday morning, December 10, at 11.30am, the main fire hydrant at the intersection of John and Joy streets in Birchleigh was open and water was running down the tar road as if there is so much water to waste.

After my second try I got hold of the water call centre (still waiting for a reply from them after a third call). While on the line waiting for the call to be answered, the voicemail clearly stated not to waste water.

This water was running for an hour and a half before they closed it. I am not sure for how long the water had been running before I got home.

The woman answering just said they were working on a burst pipe. According to my knowledge, if you have a burst pipe, surely the main water supply must be closed, and fire hydrants not opened.

They did this to reduce the amount of water flowing to the burst water pipe, to make repairs easy. While all of this was happening there was no water or even little water supply in the surrounding homes.

Surely everybody would agree that to be without water for an hour or two for repairs on burst pipes is much better than to waste the water we all are trying to save.
