This is nothing else than legal theft

Change the system and give a person at least five days to pay their bills

Is there someone, somewhere out there that can please explain to me and other residents of Kempton Park and other municipal areas outside of Kempton Park the following.

On whose authority do they run a “system” currently in use as far as the billing of our normal rates and tax account is concerned?

The account says “due date” 26th of the month and “payments included 27-01-2016”, so you better see that you pay by the 26th.

Strangely enough, they use contracted people to deliver their “final notice” with a charge of about R108, tax included. Don’t ask me why tax has to be added on here, but government also needs money, as if they don’t have enough already.

Telkom, for instance, does not charge tax/vat on late payments but do charge you a small penalty for late payment.

Back to Ekurhuleni, I paid my account on the morning of the 27th as my pension only came in just after 8pm on January 26. Paying a few rand more than what I was supposed to, I thought I was safe, no luck. On February 1 I find my “final notice” in the letter box!

On January 29 we checked, and do so daily, for post, absolutely nothing was in the letter box for the whole weekend. Yet on Monday the 1st this final notice was there for late payment.

I say this is pathetic behaviour of the municipality as this is nothing but “legal theft” as I would just have to fork out the penalty fee with my normal rates and tax bill, nothing but disgusting.

I say, change the system and give a person at least five days to pay their bills as not everybody gets paid on time. Besides, how can thousands of residents be checked at exactly the last given date/time to pay and charge them this extra late payment fee the very next day.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

Oh yes, before I forget, today is February 2, still waiting for the original account. But they are very quick to make that extra charges on the final notice. Use that same people to do normal account delivery and you might get your money on time.
