Resident confused with municipal account

Are you guessing the average usage from now on?

BAFFLED from Birch Acres writes:

Now I have seen everything!

I received my electricity account for February already on February 7. Normally the meter is read more or less on the 20th and a few days later the account arrives.

As normal, it must be paid on or before March 5.

Surely, this cannot be right, seeing that there is still more or less a month and a half left for the next (March) account that should be read more or less on March 20. In other words, my next account will be for a month and a half.

What is going on? Are you guessing the average usage from now on?

Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, replies:

The consumer’s statement which appears on e-siyakhokha was checked and found to be correct. The comments made by the consumer are therefore seemingly based on a misinterpretation.

To clarify any confusion, it must be noted that any Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality tax invoice will reflect three different date types, namely the statement date, the reading dates and the due date.

The statement date is the date on which the billing occurred. The reading date indicates the consumption period and will reflect a current (Curr) and previous date (Prev).

The due date will reflect the due date when the account is due and payable.

In the complainant’s specific instance, the statement date on his statement will reflect as February 9 2016. The reading date recorded on the statement (Curr 16/01/22, Prev 15/12/17) is for amounts consumed between December, 2015 and January 22 2016.

And the due date requested by the consumer reflects as the 5th of every month, this specific statement due date being 5 March 2016.

Should the complainant, or any residents for that matter, be unclear as to the format of their statements, same are invited to contact their local customer care centre whereby any questions will be clarified.
