‘Out of control’ drivers drive her crazy

'I can't keep quiet any longer about the lawlessness on our roads in Kempton Park'

CONCERNED RESIDENT writes:

As a concerned resident of Kempton Park and a regular road-user, I have now come to the point where I can’t keep quiet any longer about the lawlessness on our roads.

Every day, while I am travelling on various roads in and around Kempton Park, the following questions come to mind:

1. I would like to know who gave taxi associations permission to close off an entire lane on Pretoria Road in front of the taxi rank? Where are the law enforcers who must see to it that all road-users adhere to all road rules and signs?

And that with the help of the “rank marshals”. No sign to indicate that the lane is a taxi lane or taxi stopping zone.

2. I picked up that turning lanes are for road-users who do not want to sit in traffic queues. Not even to talk about traffic lights and stop signs. Why is there a traffic light or stop sign if some road-users do not adhere to it and endanger other road users’ lives?

3. Certain motorists make illegal U-turns at a red traffic light into oncoming traffic. Why?

4. Not to discriminate, but why are there so many unroadworthy taxis and other vehicles driving on our roads? Sometimes right in front of the law enforcers. One does not need a diploma or degree to see that some of these vehicles are not roadworthy.

That raises another question: where and how do these vehicles obtain their annual certificates of fitness?

5. Why are people allowed to double park on our roads, making it unsafe and difficult for other road-users to pass?

6. Why is it that certain law enforcers do not wear their seat belts and use cellphones while driving, while we are fined for doing the same?

7. Where are the law enforcers? I don’t believe that all of them are at the same accident scene, or the same court case, or even at the office at the same time.

8. Are our law enforcers properly trained for these positions?
