READER: Let’s start a new era as a rainbow nation

Our democracy is maturing and we don’t have to fear becoming a dictatorship

GEORGIE Z of Birchleigh North writes:

The municipal voting circus is now history. I am very happy with the results and while South Africa no longer has the strongest economy, the way the elections were run and the actions of both candidates and the voters, set an example to the rest of Africa.

Our democracy is maturing and we don’t have to fear becoming a dictatorship.

One of the most entertaining performances was that of the ANC ringmaster. He stood in the queue with other voters to cast his vote in his hometown, Nkandla. However, his performance did not result in the ANC winning control of that municipality.

The number of black middle-class families have increased in the suburbs and it is interesting that the party that promotes equal rights to all citizens has taken control in most of the large cities. People of different races, colours and creeds work and live together and are learning to respect each other.

Perhaps the time has come to make less of a fuss about the so called “racist” incidents. It will make it easier for our rainbow nation to forget apartheid. Emphasis should be on respect, whatever your colour, race or creed. Prejudice will, however, always exist.

I can understand the fear of black people that the situation may revert to what it was during the apartheid era if they don’t vote for the ANC. From the democratic way the elections were handled it is evident that it cannot happen.

Let’s start a new era as a rainbow nation. Help to create jobs so as to enable our nation to feed their families. But, beware, increased prosperity often brings out greed and selfishness.
