A bouquet to the metro

Reporting problems can certainly work

SANDRA from Van Riebeeck Park writes:

This time, a bouquet to one of the council’s departments for something which has been attended to.

In recent months, I have reported some damaged or blocked stormwater drains I’ve spotted in Van Riebeeck Park and Edleen.

It was reported via e-mail (callcentre@ekurhuleni.gov.za).

My thinking was twofold: one, probably the relevant department was unaware of the problems, and two, with rain coming this summer, it seemed prudent to have blocked drains cleared of debris so rainwater could run away rather than swirl around in streets after a downpour.

As I’ve driven around to check on possible remedial action, I can see that all those I’ve reported have been attended to. Blocked ones are now free of debris and those where the concrete slabs had collapsed into the drain have been repaired.

Some of the latter were a definite hazard to pedestrians, especially in the hours of darkness.

As this proves the reporting system can work, perhaps residents in other suburbs should also check storm water drains and report any which require attention.

If no-one lets the metro know about a problem, nothing will get done about resolving it.
