I live at 147 Silverleaf Avenue in Birchleigh.
I am disgusted to say that our society is not ready for the wheelie bin system.
Mine got stolen on December 11. Luckily I was at home on leave and as soon as I heard the truck roaring away, I walked outside to bring the bin back into my yard. Guess what, it was gone!
I got into my car and drove around the block and eventually spotted a metal collector with my bin at the intersection of the P91 and Mooifontein Road.
The number and address on the bin were conveniently smeared over with mud.
From reading the paper weekly I can see that these bins get stolen in huge numbers. Why then has local government embarked and still continue with this practice of wheelie bins? We have been set up for failure.
The public using this system is not always home to react immediately, we work, you know. I was lucky to get mine back.
If not, I would have to go to Norkem Park SAPS and report the bin stolen and do an affidavit and fork out more money to get a replacement. This is absolutely preposterous. It was the last time my bin went outside.
I dare the police stations to give the numbers of reported stolen wheelie bins.
One can quadruple that number because I cannot see that many frustrated and paying residents can find the time in a working day to go through the stolen bin process.
